Audi relies on Sony 4K technology in the design check

Berlin – High resolution projectors are not just heralding the next generation of films in the cinema, high end projection is also making an entrance in industry. For the first time in Europe, 4K technology is being used in the development department of an automotive manufacturer. The Ingolstadt-based car maker Audi is using Sony's 4K technology in the design check for assessing computer-developed prototypes. The companies viscon (system integrator, Neukirchen-Vluyn), RTT (software development, Munich) and Videocation (Sony Specialist Dealer, Munich) are responsible for the design of the installation. Of top priority in all this was the connection of the projector to the different systems and interfaces. Because perfect results are only delivered by perfect interaction between projector and the data fed to it.

Audi is using the Sony SXR-R110 4K projector with SXRD technology (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display). This brings the complex 3D data models to the screen from the computers in the development department. The enormous 4K resolution of 4096 x 2160 active pixels make virtual tracking shots possible around and into the interior of a computer model, right into the seams. Which means the model can be accurately assessed.

With a 4K projector, dimensions can be displayed in the computer-based development, for which a construction with four standard 2K projectors would otherwise be required. So-called "edge blending", which happens with that method where the images produced by the four separate projectors overlap, becomes completely redundant.

"The use of a 4K projector gives us big advantages in the design check review," says Christian Ziller, Coordinator of the Design Check Project at Audi. "Without edge blending we now have a seamless image display and the good picture quality and the outstanding contrast ratio mean we can check even the smallest details. At the same time, compared with a 2K solution we are saving money on maintenance and set up."
