TV Model: KDL-32CX523
Ver:PKG4.002EUA.0104

Hi,

When watching a standard definition channel such as BBC1, every time the next program is availabkle in HD then a prompt is shown on screen asking me if I want to change to HD. Is there a way to stop this prompt?

Thanks!

    Hi,

This is a co-incidence because I was just searching for exactly the same Question and Answer.  My aging Mother has this TV and she is absolutely fed up with this message.  She watches mainly in non HD as she can't get local news in HD.  I have tried several options to stop this annoying message but it still keeps popping up.

    PLEASE can someone help.

    Ricardo

    Hi b19bol,

    welcome to Questions & Answers..

Unfortunately there is not a option avalable on the Bravia that allows users to disable the 'This channel is available in HD' pop-up..

Sony have stated that the message is generated by the Freeview signal & is not part of the Bravia settings..

All I can suggest is that add a suggestion to this thread - Future BRAVIA features - requests & suggestions.

which kind of defeats the object doing so as the signal is generated by freeview so no amount of suggestion to Sony will change that!!

I guess you are referring to my suggestion to add a suggestion to this thread - Future BRAVIA features - requests & suggestions.

Well my thinking behind this is that if enough people ask then perhaps a Sony software engineer 'may' be able to identify the signal and add an option to the Bravia settings..

Sorry if you disagree, I'm only trying to offer a constructive alternative..

    Thalamus,

its not that i disagree, far from it and everything you put up offers a great deal, my point was as you already suggested was of the fact the signal is generated by freeview, and not a fault of Sony, however to put a suggestion forward may in the future get Sony to work with Freeview on a solution so that it was helpful, its just that when i read it, it did not sound right.

i should also mention while we are on the subject that my HX923 does not display this trait at all so i wonder why it does it on some and not others?

I for one do not have this issue on my KDL37-EX723.

Hi Tulipwoman, perhaps the HD prompt is region specific, that may explain why some owners have the prompt & others don't..

    Possible work around solution!

My parents had this same problem with their new KDL32EX523.  When viewing BBC 1 the pop-up appeared and directed them to channel 833 for BBC1 HD.  However 833 does not work in their area, channel 50 is BBC1 HD.

So not only is the pop-up annoying, it also gives incorrect information and led them to a blank screen!

I solved the problem by deleting channel 833 from their setup. After doing this the pop-up no longer appears.

Unfortunately I had to follow the steps in the i-manual to do this, and I have no access to it here so can't explain all the steps. But it wasn't too difficult to find and if you have trouble Sony support should be able to tell you how to delete a channel.  I was rather surprised this solution worked so well, I was half expecting the pop-up to still appear but direct me to channel 50 instead.  But now they have no annoying pop-up at all which is perfect for my parents. If they want to watch in HD they can still select channel 50 themselves.

You may have to repeat the exercise to get rid of other useless channels in the 83x series for ITV, Channel 4 etc.

All this does beg the question why the automatic channel set-up create channels which are not actually broadcasting anything - but Sony would have to answer that.

Hope this is of some help to you.

    abarton proves b19bol's point:

The TV receives the broadcast message (that the same programme is also on an HD channel) and decides whether or not to display the prompt to the user, depending on whether the HD channel is present. But the TV doesn't offer the user the option to disable those prompts - which is an annoying design choice.

The workaround is great as long as the prompt offers the wrong channel, because you can delete that wrong channel, retain the option of watching in HD on the correct channel, and get no prompts. But if they put that right, I expect your only choices are to put up with those prompts, or do without the HD channel altogether.

This is unsatisfactory. If you use a simplified remote (such as the Sony RM-KZ1T for children, or, in our case, for a parent with Alzheimer's), you cannot press [Yes] or [No]. The user may be confused and will have no way of responding to the prompt in any case. The TV needs to provide an option to suppress those messages.

Great workaround - this works for me.

I question the assertion that the signal is sent by freeview as the message does not appear on any other tv i own, including other sony, hitachi, lg and panasonic. The fix is within sonys gift to deliver.

    • When watching an SD (Standard Definition) channel, an on screen message may automatically appear providing the option to view the same programme in HD and provides the option to switch to an HD (High Definition) channel.

    • Currently this on screen function cannot be switched off and will not disappear from the screen unless a choice is made by the customer.

    • We have received some complaints about this so are therefore investigating the possibility of having a manual option to remove this message.

    • If you would like to see an option to remove the message, please click on the "Notify" me tab at the bottom of the screen and we will e-mail you with the results of our investigations. Selecting the "Notify" tab will also let us know how many customers find this message prompt an issue.

So, everybody -- click that today!

If you would like to see an option to remove the message, please click 'Notify Me'.

Selecting it will also let us know how many customers find this message prompt an issue.

Workaround solution worked for us, too:

Sony KDL-32CX523 shows prompt in the middle of the screen:

This event is available in HD on service 935.
Do you want to change to HD event?
         [Yes] [No]

    http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5325/7419632368_1951f176a8_n.jpg

Select [Yes], and it goes to channel 935.

Unfortunately, channel 935 has no signal - the real BBC One HD signal is on Freeview channel 050 - so that isn't a good result:

    http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5159/7419632582_273ff19eb1_n.jpg

Workaround is to delete the relevant channels from the TV.

    To delete channels, go to

    Settings/Home Menu > Digital Set-up > Digital Programme Sorting.

Here, we've deleted "BBC HD" (934) and "BBC One HD" (935), and we're about to delete "ITV1 HD" (936) and "Channel 4 HD" (937):

    http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5327/7419632474_c80c99d1e5_n.jpg

The channel numbers we got (934 - 937) are different from those seen by abarton (833 etc). Maybe it's region-dependent. We're in a BN16 postcode.

Sometimes we've seen it switch to BBC HD correctly when you say [Yes], which means that if you want to be sure of not getting those "change to HD event?" prompts at all, you may have to sacrifice the HD channel. That's kind of a shame - somewhat defeats the object of having an HD set.

To be notified if Sony do something to fix this - and to encourage them to fix it - select 'Notify Me' at:
